Yes, we get it, the ND miata has some ride height and suspension travel. Guess what? The people who made it that way are smarter than you. And are better drivers. And are probably better looking. Probably with less BO and fewer crushed dreams too. So please stop with the complaints about ride height/body roll on a car you’ve never driven and weren’t going to buy anyways. Thank you.

I don’t get the whining. Every complaint has been the case for the past 25 years and for the past 25 years the aftermarket has taken good care of it.
Wahhh the suspension isn’t optimized for the track days I don’t do!

If you want a weekend canyon car, it’s ready to go. If you want a weekend track toy, you are going to replace the suspension on a $30k car regardless of what it starts with.
Same story with the Toyobarus. This is a starter chassis in an econocar shipping box.

oh and needs 100 more horsepower and start at 25k.
Then
I’ll consider one.

50/50. While it’s designed by engineers, it’s designed for a broad market. Not every Miata owner wants to do trackday (bro) or carve up and down mountains like Initial D. There’s a surprisingly amount of Miata owners who are above 50 years-old who just want a nice small roadster for them to re-live their younger years (and they probably have more money to spend on it than younger crowds, thus why that age group is taken more seriously). It’s a jack of all trades suspension, it’ll be fine with whatever you’re planning on doing with it but it won’t be perfectly set up for anything.
Besides, if they want to lower it so much, then shut up and pay for some proper aftermarket suspension from Racing Beat or Flyin’ Miata.

Yeah, if people want to drop in in the weeds and make the ride harsh that’s their prerogative, but that’s not going to have a broad appeal to buyers.

Yeah, I like that it has suspension travel and ride height. I found out on Grattan, my Fiesta ST’s suspension travel let me take quite a few sections a lot better than the much more limited toyobarus. That also helps for day to day road imperfections. If the chassis team was just as fanatic as the suspension team, the new miata probably is one of the best sorted cars to drive on the road. Period.

But lap times, bro! My NA miata I got for 3000$ has better lap times tha this! Why does it cost so much if my craigslist beat to shit track day miata is faster?!?!? I WONT BUY IT!

My biggest problem is that none of the designers were taller than 5’4”.
Makes it difficult do drive if you’re > 6’, all you see is the bar at the top of the windshield.

Is it that bad? I’m 5’11” and fit into an NA miata easily. I guess things have changed.

I remember reading a Car & Driver when the first Miata came out, about how the exhaust engineer listened to system after system and went with the one that sounded as close as they could get to an MGB. That unique dual-side draft intake/farty can sound has been the goal of many exhaust makers for decades. Unfortunately you just can’t make an exhaust sound like an intake, but they came really close. So when you consider the Miata’s “Target Market”, the 50+ looking for a nice roadster used to be the target market for the MGB, and is right where they want to be.
It’s tough - any two seater can’t be a family car, so it’s immediately a niche market car and they have to appeal to as broad a crowd as they can.

They didn’t lose me at ride height/suspension travel, they lost me at Miata :D

Im really happy for you, Imma let you finish but the ND needs some wider wheels.
The rear are like 2 inches inboard.

Great retort.
I will say they probably could have gone with a stiffer sway bar, but I presume they didn't for a few factors: cost, ride, and enthusiasts mess with it anyways.

But the rear wheels being more inboard means that means the brakes are also more inboard. Isn’t inboard rear brakes an alfa romeo thing?

I hate the “stock suspension was designed by engineers who are smarter and have more resources than you so the stock suspension setup is the best suspension setup” line of reasoning.
Yes, car company engineers are smart people with advanced tools at their disposal, but stock suspension setups are always a compromise between requirements including ride quality, cornering grip, body roll, handling balance (i.e. not so much oversteer that customers end up in ditches), ground clearance, bumper height laws in various countries, and manufacturing costs.
The stock suspension setup is what the manufacturers’ engineers have arrived at in order to satisfy all those requirements. That’s it.
If someone who buys the car has a different set of priorities, they can easily go out to the aftermarket and find some suspension parts that more accurately reflect that person’s priorities.

I rode with Travis on the autocross course, and the suspension felt good. Softer than my BRZ, but more like a slightly stiffer than stock NA/NB. I could really feel the weight transfer as he balanced and/or chucked the car through the corners. That sensation is something I really like about the Miata.

Obviously they have to cater to the people that will actually buy it, hairdressers.

In there defense super cars are track optimized and I’ve never heard of a Ferrari LaFerrari being tracked by a non-magazine.
Then again LaFerraris aren’t meant to be daily driven* in the first place.

It is proof that the dedicated roadster is the “superior” car for experience’s sake. And they’re right on the Fiesta and toyobaru being compromises. The miata making barely any nods to anything other than driving is a modern marvel in my mind. If my wife in the future will let me, I would have no problems getting like a used fusion (or mazda 6) and buying a new miata as my one and only toy/funcar/commuter. Alas I alrady made my choice and I probably need the extra space with the Fiesta anyways. But maybe 2 or 3 years down the line......I *did* get my ford at a combo ford/mazda place........Might have to see what cards I hold down the line.

I’ve been spouting off about how awesome the Toyobaru is ever since I got on here. And yet, I have to agree with Travis - the ND is the better sub-$30k sports car, if you want a no compromise dedicated sports car. I’ll stick with my BRZ because I need some of those compromises right now. And I could pick up an NB and refresh it a bit for a bunch less money than an ND.
I’d like to take an ND for a drive once they actually come out, and compare it directly to my BRZ in a bunch of areas. That would be fun to do and fun to write up.
